The sci-fi comedy 8-gatsu 31-nichi no Long Summer is expanding beyond the page with two major screen adaptations. The production team confirmed this week that the series will be adapted into both a television anime and a live-action drama. An initial teaser visual accompanied the announcement, though further details regarding the staff, cast, or release timing have not been disclosed.
Studio Shaft, the house behind the Monogatari series and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, will helm the anime production. The story follows two high school students, Suzuki Takaya and Takagi Kana, who are stuck in a perpetual time loop of August 31st. The narrative focuses on Suzuki’s recurring attempts to find a girlfriend before the day resets, a premise that balances teenage anxiety with a sci-fi twist.
Ikkado Itou launched the manga in Morning magazine in March 2023. The series has since gained international reach, with Kodansha offering a digital version on K Manga and Seven Seas Entertainment publishing the physical volumes. With the seventh volume arriving in November, the franchise is building momentum quickly. Given Shaft’s signature aesthetic, it remains to be seen how they will translate the manga's repetitive, high-stakes comedy into an episodic format.
