Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima's seminal samurai manga, Lone Wolf and Cub, is set to receive a traditional Kabuki stage play adaptation. The production will premiere at Tokyo's Kabukiza Theatre, with performances scheduled from June 3 to June 25.
Shidō Nakamura II, known for his roles in live-action adaptations like Death Note, will take on the iconic role of Ogami Ittō. He will be joined on stage by his five-year-old son, Natsuki Nakamura, who will portray the young Ogami Daigorō. Film director Masanori Inoue is helming the Kabuki adaptation.
This new stage production revisits the legendary tale of Ogami Ittō, the Shogun's executioner who becomes a freelance assassin after being framed, wandering the land with his infant son in pursuit of revenge. The original manga, serialized between 1970 and 1976, has previously inspired multiple live-action films, stage plays, and a television series, cementing its status as a cornerstone of samurai fiction.
The manga's influence extends beyond Japan, having been one of the first manga series to be regularly published in North America, first by First Comics and later by Dark Horse Comics, which continues to release the series in various formats.
